Presentation of 2007 Community Enhancement Awards

For over four decades, the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry has recognized member businesses and organizations that have provided our community with new business development, business rehabilitation or renovation and businesses who have substantially increased their employee-base or developed new programs beneficial to Des Plaines. This year Community Enhancement Awards were presented at the Mayor’s Annual Address to Business. The Chamber recognized five businesses that have gone beyond the norm when improving or “growing” their business. Such growth and improvements go a long way toward enhancing the entire community not only in appearance, but by providing new or better service to customers, creating new jobs or otherwise contributing to the local economy.

Bax Global

In 2007, Bax Global opened a new logistics facility in Des Plaines that quadrupled the size of their old facility located at O’Hare airport. Located at 1347 S Mt. Prospect Road, the 228,003 sq. foot state-of-art facility has 84 truck bays and storage space for 70 trailers. The new facility benefits local and global shippers by offering expanded import and export operations including expanded storage and a new industrial cooling system for shipments requiring a cooler environment.

Cumberland Café

In June 2007, Cumberland Café was opened in the Frisbie Senior Center. What makes this business unique is that it is owned by the members and they, along with four paid employees, manage the Café. The volunteer positions give seniors an opportunity to contribute to the center and provide them with a wonderful restaurant where they can meet with friends and family to enjoy a delicious meal. Cumberland Café offers a Congregate Meal program that serves 10,000 seniors 60 and over each year. The Café is open to the public for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday 8:30 to 2:30.

Income Tax Y Mas – Marianna Tamayo, President

Marianna Tamayo completely renovated her property at 1365 Prospect Avenue. The renovation transformed an unsightly lot and unattractive building into a 2 story modern, handicap accessible office building with a parking lot. Additional touches like the large plate glass windows and professional landscaping make this a very attractive business property that is an asset to Des Plaines.

Midwest Bank

The newly constructed building at 1545 Ellinwood was started by Des Plaines National Bank. The building reflects the lines, structure and time period of Kinder Hardware, the building it replaced. The bank looked at every means of preserving the Kinder building but deterioration and modern building codes made that impossible. The facility has allowed the bank to offered its customers new drive thru banking, safe deposit box rental, drive up ATM as well as the complete full service banking that it offered in the past.

Science and Arts Academy

The Science and Arts Academy opened its new facility located at 1825 Miner Street in September 2007. The 6 ½ acre campus takes the place of two industrial buildings formerly located on the site. One of the buildings was the former home of Science & Arts Academy, an office building that had been converted into a school when the Academy was founded by Dr. Helene Bartz in 1992. The Academy purchased the adjoining land and the demolition and building project began in earnest in the autumn of 2006. In partnership with OPUS North Corporation, the Academy designed and built a state-of-the-art facility and tripled the green space on the property. The building features bright colors, open spaces and an impressive profile to complement the impressive students that work inside.
