Job Title: Executive Director, Chamber of Commerce
Location: Des Plaines, IL
Reports to: Board of Directors
FLSA Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Job Summary: The Executive Director of the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and Industry
is the key leadership position responsible for overseeing the daily operations, strategic
initiatives, and overall success of the organization. This individual works closely with the Board
of Directors, members, and community stakeholders to foster economic growth, advocate for
business interests, and enhance the local business environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management:
● Lead the strategic planning process in collaboration with the Board of Directors, setting
short- and long-term goals.
● Manage day-to-day operations, including staff, budget, and resources, ensuring
alignment with the Chamber’s mission and goals.
● Oversee financial management, including budget preparation, monitoring, and reporting
to the Board of Directors.
Membership Development:
● Develop and implement initiatives to grow Chamber membership and enhance member
engagement.
● Maintain strong relationships with current members and provide high-quality services,
resources, and networking opportunities.
● Oversee membership recruitment and retention strategies.
Community & Economic Development:
● Advocate for business-friendly policies and work with local government officials,
agencies, and other partners on issues impacting the business community.
● Act as a liaison between businesses, government, and other local organizations to
promote economic development and job creation.
● Represent the Chamber at community events, speaking engagements, and public
forums to enhance the Chamber’s visibility.
Marketing & Communications:
● Promote the Chamber’s activities, programs, and events through various communication
channels, including social media, newsletters, and press releases.
● Ensure effective marketing of Chamber programs and events to increase visibility and
participation.
● Serve as the public face of the Chamber, maintaining a positive and professional
presence in the community.
Program & Event Management:
● Develop, coordinate, and execute Chamber events, such as networking events,
business expos, and educational programs.
● Ensure all events and programs align with the Chamber’s mission and provide value to
members.
● Oversee the implementation of new initiatives that benefit the local business community.
Board & Committee Engagement:
● Work closely with the Board of Directors to implement policies, programs, and decisions
made by the Board.
● Provide leadership in developing and supporting committees and task forces.
● Prepare regular reports to the Board on the organization’s performance and activities.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
● Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Relations, or related field (Master’s
degree preferred).
● 5-7 years of experience in a leadership role, preferably in nonprofit management,
economic development, or business associations.
● Experience in membership-based organizations or chambers of commerce is highly
desirable.
Skills & Competencies:
● Strong leadership and management skills with a track record of success in building and
leading teams.
● Excellent communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
● Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including business
owners, government officials, and community leaders.
● Financial acumen with experience in budget management and financial reporting.
● Ability to balance strategic vision with operational efficiency.
● Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
